Dental emergencies happen unexpectedly at any time and at
any place. No matter what the dental emergency, it’s important to take your
child to the dentist office or emergency room as soon as possible!
However, in the event of a dental emergency, there are a
few tips to follow that can be the difference of saving your child’s permanent
tooth or losing it!
Here are a few tips to follow, courtesy of
mouthhealthy.org!
- If a tooth is knocked-out, keep it moist. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without it touching the root. If that is not at all possible, place it in between your child’s check and gum, or in a glass of milk.
- If a tooth is cracked, immediately rinse your child’s mouth out with warm water and clean the area affected. Put a cold compress on your child’s face to keep the swelling down.
- If your child bites their tongue or lip, gently clean the area and apply a cold compress.
- If your child is experiencing a toothache, rinse the mouth out with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between the teeth. Do not put any aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissue.
- For an object stuck in your child’s mouth, try to gently remove it with floss but do not try to remove it with any sharp pointed instruments.
