Why Should Your Child Wear a Mouthguard?

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Do your kids love playing football, soccer, and other fall sports?  They're a great way to stay busy, keep in shape, and most importantly - have fun!  Just make sure that your kids are protected from injuries while they play.  Wearing a mouthguard helps protect your teeth from sports injuries and trauma.

Wearing a Mouthguard Prevents:

  • Bruising by acting as a buffer between the lips and teeth.
  • Tooth fractures and chips.
  • Opposing teeth from contacting each other.
  • Jaw trauma by acting as a shock absorber.
For more information on mouthguards and their benefits, check out this article in Dentistry Today.  You can also contact our office for more information on what your child can do to protect their teeth this fall.   Call 516-222-5100 to contact our Garden City office or 516-759-7000 to contact our Glen Cove office.

Fruits & Veggies - More Matters Month

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

September is Fruits & Veggies - More Matters Month!

You're probably not surprised to hear that eating fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to stay healthy.  However, many kids (and adults) don't reach the recommended amount.  How many servings of fruits and veggies do you eat each day?

Here are a few ways to add more fruits and veggies to your daily meals:
Breakfast: Eat fresh fruit on their own, try mixing some dried fruit into your cereal, or make a fruit smoothie.
Lunch: Try some carrots with dip or apples with peanut butter.  You can also substitute soda with juice that is low in sugar.
Dinner:  Green salads, frozen vegetables, and vegetable casseroles are all great options.  You can even add dried fruits to grain side dishes like rice and couscous.
Snack: Small bananas and apples are great snacks on the go.
Remember to always brush after eating fruits and veggies.  Many of these foods can be high in sugars that leave teeth prone to plaque.

Check out this website for more information on how to incorporate more fruit and veggies into your diet.  You can also contact our office with any questions you have about how to keep your teeth healthy by eating more fruits and veggies!  Call 516-222-5100 to contact our Garden City office or 516-759-7000 to contact our Glen Cove office.

Back-To-School Dental Exams

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Now that the kids are back in school, don’t forget to schedule their fall dental cleanings!  Regular cleanings help prevent future dental problems and help catch any issues early on.  Here are a couple of ways that tooth care can affect your child’s school year.
  • Attendance – Toothaches are a common cause of missed school days.  This absence can have an impact on their performance throughout the year.  Bringing your kids in for a fall exam can help prevent these serious toothaches!
  • Grades – Studies show that children with toothaches are more likely to do poorly in school.  Tooth pain can be distracting!  We can help address small cavities and tooth pains early on in the year so that your kids can focus on learning.
As the new school year begins, make sure that dental pain isn’t distracting your child from learning.  Check out this article for more information on back-to-school dental problems and tooth care.

Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Did your kids head back to school this week?  A healthy lunch is a great way to make sure they stay focused throughout the day – and it’s good for their teeth too!  Here are a few tips to help make their back-to-school lunches tooth-friendly.

Healthy Lunch Tips:

·        Calcium – Foods like milk, yogurt and cheese that are rich in calcium are a great way to keep teeth strong.
·        Vitamin C – Red peppers and oranges are high in Vitamin C.  They keep gums healthy by strengthening blood vessels and connective tissues.
·        Protein – Soups and whole-wheat sandwiches made with chicken, turkey or ham are a great way to help teeth build enamel.
·        Vitamin D – Hard boiled eggs and tuna fish are not just protein-rich, they also help aid in the absorption of calcium.

For more tips on how to pack a healthy, tooth-friendly lunch, read this article. You can also contact our office with any questions you have about how to keep teeth healthy!  Call 516-222-5100 to contact our Garden City office or 516-759-7000 to contact our Glen Cove office.
