Tips to Help You Celebrate a Healthy Thanksgiving

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of delicious foods and drinks.  As you enjoy your Thanksgiving meal, don't forget about your dental health!  Here are a few tips to help you keep your teeth healthy through the holiday season!

Thanksgiving Tips:

  • Moderate Sugar - Holiday foods and candies can be high in sugar.  Parents should make sure that kids don't overindulge.  Watch out for carbonated and sugary drinks that damage teeth.
  • Limit Snacking - Limit yourself to your Thanksgiving meal.  Snacking throughout the day can be bad for your teeth!
  • Remember to Brush - Don't forget to brush your teeth after dinner.  The cooked starches in breads, crackers, and pastas can take longer to clear the mouth than sugar.
  • Choose Healthy Snacks - Cheddar, swiss, mozzarella, and monterey jack are great snacks that are good for your teeth!

For more tips on how to care for your teeth this Thanksgiving, check out this infograph from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Protecting Teeth With Dental Sealants

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

When kids are first learning to brush, it isn't always easy for them to reach their back molars.  Dental sealants are a great way to help protect these hard-to-reach tooth surfaces!

Dental sealants are bonded directly to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They cover up any grooves and depressions that are hard for toothbrushes to reach. Sealants protect tooth enamel from plaque and acids that would otherwise damage teeth. Dental sealants can last for several years before they need to be reapplied.

While we always recommend that parents supervise children until they are old enough to brush thoroughly, sealants can help protect vulnerable areas by sealing out plaque and food!

Tooth Care Tips for Young Children

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Healthy mouths are important no matter what your age.  Good oral health habits help babies and young children develop beautiful teeth that last a lifetime.

Tooth Care Tips:

  • Keep Gums Clean - Even before baby teeth come, it's important to keep your child's gums clean.  Gently wipe the gums after each meal to keep their mouths healthy.
  • Schedule Their First Appointment - Kids should visit the dentist after their first birthday or after their first tooth comes in.
  • Careful Bottle Habits - Babies shouldn't go to sleep with a bottle whether at night or just for a nap.  Letting sugary juices or milk sit can make teeth prone to tooth decay.
  • Choose Water - When possible, always give your child water over juice.  Sugary drinks are bad for teeth!
  • Don't Share Germs - Avoid sharing food, spoons, and forks with your children.  Spreading germs in this way can actually cause cavities.
These are just a few of the ways that you can keep tiny teeth beautiful and healthy, while instilling great oral health habits that last a life time. For more information on how to give your child a healthy mouth, check out this brochure.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy This Thanksgiving

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it.  While planning your feast, be sure to include healthy traditional foods that are good for family too.  Here are a few ways to incorporate tooth-friendly foods into your Thanksgiving meal!

Tooth-Friendly Thanksgiving:
  • Yams - Instead of having candied yams with marshmallows, opt for a more natural option.  Yams are a great side dish on their own, without marshmallows that stick to your teeth.
  • Vegetables -  Healthy vegetables like broccoli and carrots are a great side dishes that are good for your teeth!
  • Cranberries - Cranberries can be good for you and help protect your teeth against cavities.  Just remember to read the labels beforehand.  Many cranberry sauces contain a lot of sugar, which isn't good for your teeth.
  • Milk - Dairy is great for keeping teeth healthy and strong.  Milk can be added when you make mashed potatoes or you can drink it during dessert.
No matter what you eat this Thanksgiving, remember to brush your teeth and floss afterwards!  Read more about how you and your family can celebrate a tooth-friendly Thanksgiving here.
