Start the School Year Off with Healthy Back-to-School Tips

Are your kids ready for the first day of school?  These tips will help your kids start off the year on the right foot.

Healthy Back-To-School Tips:

  • Develop a Brushing Routine - Now that kids have to start getting up on time, it's important to get back into a good dental routine.  Have kids brush before they leave for the bus, and again before they go to bed at night.  You should also remind them to floss!
  • Purchase a Mouth Guard - Do your kids participate in any Fall sports?  Mouth guards help protect teeth from injuries during contact sports like football, baseball, basketball and soccer.
  • Get Plenty of Sleep - It can be tough to adjust back to a regular sleep routine.  If your kids are notorious late sleepers, it's important that they get enough sleep!  Don't let them fall back into their summer sleep schedules.
  • Address Anxiety - Sometimes kids have a difficult time adjusting to their new school schedules.  Reassure your kids and discuss any issues and concerns they have about the upcoming year.

How to Pack a Healthy Back-to-School Lunch

Are you ready for the kids to head back-to-school?  Star the yeart off right with lunches that are healthy for their brains and their teeth!  Here are a few foods to include when packing school lunches this year.

Foods to Include:

  • Lean Protein - Lunch meats, leftovers from dinner, peanut butter, hummus, cheese and soy products are all a great way to add healthy proteins to your lunch.
  • Whole Grains - Opt for whole wheat breads, pitas, tortillas and wraps when making your sandwiches this year!
  • Fruit - Add a fresh fruit like an apple or pear to their lunch box.  Apples are good for keeping their teeth healthy, too!
  • Vegetables - Carrots, celery, cucumbers and other vegetables can be added to sandwiches or salads.  The crunchy vegetables are a good way to naturally keep their teeth clean throughout the day!
  • Low-Fat or Fat Free Dairy - Milk, yogurt and cottage cheese are great snacks to include with your lunch.  The calcium is good for growing teeth, too!
