Why Eating An Apple A Day Helps Your Teeth In Many Ways!

The old tale goes “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away.” For anyone nervous about going to the dentist, pick up a bag of apples and keep reading to find out why eating an apple a day can help your teeth in many ways.

An apple is a healthy fruit; one that your mother drilled into your head at an early age saying, “Apples are good for you!” Now, if you knew at that early age that eating an apple a day can keep your mouth cleaner in many ways and help avoid scary dentist visits, then as children we would be listening to our mothers and eating apples all the time!

People do not realize that taking a bite of an apple acts similar to a toothbrush, due to the presence of fiber rich flesh and skin.  Eating an apple helps fight plaque, stains on your teeth, removes any food particles sticking to your gums as well as enhances teeth whitening. You would not think that apples have such a presence on your teeth when you eat them, but they can be responsible for acting as a scrub on your tongue, teeth and gums. The best way to maximum the benefit of an apple is to eat the skin, which helps when you are a coffee drinker and have stains on your teeth. Most people think that eating an apple when you wake up or as a mid-day snack is refreshing, but when in reality you should be eating an apple after dinner or before bed to get rid of any stains or food that is stuck in your teeth.

To fight bad breathe would you rather chew gum or eat an apple? Most people say they would chew gum, but if you are having issues with bad breathe, eat more fruits with rich fiber like apples which acts as a natural breath freshener and helps prevent bad breath!

An Apple a Day Can Keep the Dentist Away! Eat more apples to help with your overall dental hygiene.

NYC Health Board Places Ban on Super-Sized Sugary Drinks!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City

A rule has recently been passed in New York City by the health board stating that super-sized sugary drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries will be banned. The new ban will put a 16-ounce size limit on cups and bottles of non-diet soda, sweetened teas and other high calorie beverages that are offered.

The ban will only be placed at restaurants, concession stands and eateries but will not apply at supermarkets or convenience stores. Health board officials believe that this ban is necessary due to the obesity epidemic in our country.

Many New Yorkers are unhappy with this decision by the health board and believe the ban is “a gross government intrusion.” Also, beverage industries and restaurants think that health experts are exaggerating the role sugary beverages play in obesity in America.

What do you think about this ban? Do you think it will help eliminate obesity in New Yorkers? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page, linked HERE

If you are someone who frequents the Roosevelt Field mall, you’ve probably noticed some changes in the past year. However, the renovations are far from over!

There are new restaurants to appear such as The Capital Grille and Havana Central, renovated and redesigned spaces and a Neiman Marcus to soon be added to the already amazing Roosevelt Field. There are also plans to renovate the AMC movie theatre and upgrade it to a premium movie theater.

The food court is also going to be relocated to the Dick’s Sporting Goods area. It will go from its current 1,000 square feet to 1,200 square feet. The space where the food court is currently located will be turned into small stores.

A representative for Roosevelt Field reports their first project will be the food court and it is scheduled to begin in early 2013.

Activity Ideas to Keep the Kids Occupied on Road Trips!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City

Are you planning any road trips this summer with your children? Some parents are apprehensive about taking long trips in the car with small children because they get bored easily!

Here are some ideas for travel games and activities for you children on the go! With a little extra planning and a little extra baggage, your kids are sure to keep busy!

Self-contained toys such as mini Etch-A-Sketch or Magna Doodles are great games for travel. Whether it’s for a car road trip, a flight or a trip to the grocery store these games are mess free and allow your kids to use their imagination!

Interactive books are another great choice! These books have flaps to lift, tabs to pull, laces to tie, wheels to turn and stickers that can be moved around! All of these options are ways to enhance your child’s motor skills. They also keep your children occupied and interested longer than a regular book.

Crayons, markers and coloring books are classics but can keep your children occupied anywhere! Always keep a backpack filled with crayons, washable markers and coloring books handy for any on the go situation or road trip!

I spy is another great game for a long car ride! Simply ask your child to find things in the car or around the car and then ask them to pick something for you to find. This game is sure to keep the kids occupied for quite some time!

If your kids like to interact in pretend play, it’s smart to always carry around lightweight toy cars and animal figures! Hot wheels cars are extremely popular amongst toddlers along with zoo animal figurines.
