Why Bottled Water May Be Responsible for Tooth Decay!

Many dentists and health officials have come to the conclusion that bottled water may be related to the rising rate of tooth decay in young children.

A New York City parent brought her children to the doctor and they all had cavities. She couldn’t understand why because her children rarely eat sweets or drink soda. The dentist asked her if her kids drink bottled water or not, and they do. The dentist told her to make sure her kids were drinking tap water and not bottled water because the bottled water isn’t fluoridated.

A spokesman for pediatric dentistry reported that children should be brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, sees the dentist twice a year for fluoride treatment and should be getting fluoride from their drinking water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reported that bottled water may not contain a sufficient amount of fluoride, which is important in preventing tooth decay and promoting oral health.

Tooth decay in young children seems to be a huge problem in our nation’s youth. The Centers for Disease Control reported that in a recent study about 42% of children between the ages of 2 and 11 in the United States had cavities in their baby teeth.

My Personal Connection to Children with Prader-Willi Syndrome

If you haven’t already heard, this holiday season Dr. Stacey Reynolds and everyone at Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City are going to give a very special gift to a very special cause for children with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

As a pediatric dentist who treats children with special needs, I have a huge place in my heart for children with special needs. Children with Prader-Willi Syndrome, specifically, are particularly important to me.

Not too long ago, a child very close to me (whose family wishes to remain anonymous) was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome. I have known him since birth and have watched him grow to be a loving, caring, fun and silly child.

I have seen what early intervention can do for children with PWS.  He has had PT and OT since several weeks’ old, speech since he was a toddler, and has attended a special school since he was 2 years old.  Had all of these services not been available to him since his early diagnosis, I am certain he would not be as advanced as he is today in his everyday tasks.

I anticipate the difficulties he will face as he goes through elementary school considering almost all children with Prader-Willi Syndrome have learning disabilities, social deficits and motor insufficiencies.

His dietary challenges haven't surfaced as of yet but we know this is inevitable.  I strongly believe that all of the information that his family received before he was even 2 months old has helped them cope tremendously. 

The power of prevention and knowledge of what lies ahead is astounding.

This is one of the reasons why raising funds and more importantly awareness to the Prader-Willi Syndrome is a goal that’s very important to me, my family and friends. I would like everyone to understand what the syndrome consists of and just how hard it is for families and children to cope with.

Not enough people are familiar with the syndrome and turn their heads to the chronic issue. Please help me raise awareness for the Prader-Willi Syndrome.
