Don’t have a recipe? We've got you covered! Let us know what you think on our Facebook page!

Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for currants
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into ½ inch dice
  • 1 ¾ cup cold buttermilk, shaken
  • 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1 cup dried currants

Directions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Add the butter and mix on low speed until the butter is incorporated with the flour.

With a fork, lightly beat buttermilk, egg, and orange zest together in a measuring cup. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture. Combine the currants with 1 tablespoon of flour and mix into the dough. (It will be very wet.)

Place the dough on a well-floured board and knead it a few times into a round loaf. Place the loaf on the prepared sheet pan and lightly cut an X into the top of the bread with a serrated knife. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. When you tap the loaf, it will have a hollow sound.
Cool on a baking rack and serve at room temperature!

How To Handle Your Child's Dental Fears!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

One of the most difficult tasks for parents is getting their children who fear the dentist, to the office. It isn't uncommon for children to fear the dentist. There are many children who are absolutely terrified of the dentist.
However, the dentist may not be as scary as you once thought.

It is crucial that parents begin bringing their children to the dentist at age one. The younger you bring them; the more familiar they will be with the dentist and the office. The longer you wait, the more fearful they become.

Nowadays, many Pediatric Dentistry offices are very warm and inviting to young children. The office is a playful and welcoming environment geared toward helping children feel more comfortable.

As a parent, you should never let your child skip those dental checkups! The more times your child attends the office, the more familiar they’ll become with it.

Has your child been to the dentist recently? Make your appointment today! For more information, visit our Facebook page, LINKED HERE!

Preventing Cavities in Preschoolers!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Do you want to help prevent cavities for your preschoolers? Here are some tips on the best ways to prevent tooth decay and cavities, courtesy of nickjr.com!
  • No bedtime bottles or juice drinks – Sugary juice drinks your children consume throughout the day from their sippy cups should be kept to a minimum as well as what they consume before bed. Fruit juices contain large amounts of sugar and are extremely acidic. It is a good idea to dilute your children’s juice drinks with water.
  • Limit Sweets – Your children can consume sweets, in moderation.
  • Ask about Tooth Sealants - Dentists can seal teeth of kids as young as 2 1/2, but generally this procedure is reserved for older kids because the patient needs to sit still and keep her mouth open while the sealant material sets up. Teeth with pre-existing cavities or decay should never have sealant applied to them

Back to School Dental Tips!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Can you believe were approaching mid-August already!? It seems as if Memorial Day weekend was yesterday! The summer is quickly coming to an end and that can only mean one thing, back to school for the kids!
There are many routine steps that parents often take to prepare their children for heading back to school. One of those steps should be bringing the children into the dentist for a regular yearly visit.

Here are a couple back to school dental tips to help make the transition back into the school year a little bit easier! These tips are courtesy of Dr. Kent Boozer, a pediatric dentist from Texas!

Dr. Boozer reports that a common reason children miss school is because of a sore tooth or a tooth ache. One way around this to ensure the kids aren’t missing anything important in the classroom is to schedule a checkup for the kid’s right before they go back to school. This way if there is anything that has to be taken care of, it can be done before school resumes.

Also, Dr. Boozer reports that the type of toothpaste that children use is important. He advises parents to make sure they purchase toothpaste with fluoride in it and to brush teeth for two minutes. Often times it may be difficult to get your children to brush for a whole two minutes. However, try to keep them in the bathroom and brushing for as close to two minutes as possible.

Parents should also keep a close eye on what their children are eating, says Dr. Boozer. They should especially watch out for sour or acid based candies and carbonated drinks that can strip away the enamel of your children’s teeth.

Do you think these tips will be helpful for your children? Do you have any additional tips? Let us know on our Facebook page, linked HERE!

How Early Should Dental Prevention Begin?

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Did you know that tooth decay is recognized as the most common chronic disease affecting children in the United States?  Many dentists believe that children can avoid dental issues by establishing healthy dental routines extremely early on in their childhood, with the help of their parents.

Many dentists also believe that parents don’t get their children to their first dental visit early enough in their life. Dr. Megan Kinder believes that children should see a dentist before age 3 or within six months of their first tooth’s appearance. Many children fear the dentist; however, pediatric dentist offices are a very warm and welcoming environment for children.

Typically a child’s first dental visit will involve teeth counting. The second visit is generally a cleaning the third visit can be a cleaning, check-up or fluoride treatment if necessary.  Many dentists also believe that prevention is key in pediatric dentistry.

How old was your child on their first dental visit? Let us know about your experience on our Facebook page, linked HERE!

Changes In Pediatric Dentistry!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

If you’ve taken your child to the dentist recently, you’ve probably noticed some changes in the office since you were a kid. There are continuous changes being made in pediatric dentistry all aimed at making the offices more kid-friendly. The changes are also being made in the actual practice of pediatric dentistry.

Here are some of the ways that pediatric dentistry is advancing:

Dental Sealants are being incorporated into pediatric dentistry. This is something that you probably weren’t offered as a child in the dentist’s office. Teeth have many rough surfaces that are hard to clean. A dental sealant can be applied to these areas and make the pitted and grooved areas of a tooth smooth and easy to clean. This is an easy process and being seen more frequently in pediatric dentistry nowadays.

Fluoride Treatments are another process being incorporated into pediatric dentistry. Fluoride is applied using a cotton swab or it can be placed in a tray and the child can bite down and keep their mouth there for several minutes. Once a child has received a fluoride treatment, they shouldn’t eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after.

Should you remove your child’s wisdom teeth? This is a question that kids and parents often face. Dentists begin to look at kid’s teeth at about age 16 or 17 to see if there is room for the teeth to come in properly without causing problems. If the kids teeth look like they aren’t coming in properly, some dentists will suggest removing the teeth sooner rather than later to make the removal of them easier.

It is also being seen that children are visiting the dentist at earlier ages. This seems to reduce the child’s anxiety of going to the dentist and they begin to build a trusting relationship with the doctor.

Have your kids received any of these procedures at your pediatric dentistry? Let us know on our Facebook page linked HERE!
