Does Your Child Have Braces?

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Does your child have braces? If so, they've probably come across a couple of different foods that are difficult to eat. Especially any foods that are sticky, chewy or hard can be difficult for them to break up and swallow.

Braces are extremely delicate and there are several foods that can cause them to break! Some of the most common foods that may cause braces to break are:
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn
  • Hard candy
  • Gum
  • Caramel
  • Gummi bears
  • Apple, pears and raw veggies
  • Corn on the cob
  • Pretzels
  • Peanut brittle
  • Pizza crust
  • Bagels
  • Ribs

Any food that you have to bite into in order to consume is a prime food for breaking braces. However, there are a couple of ways to get around it! If your child loves eating corn on the cob or ribs, cut the corn off the cob and the meat off the bone. Also, you can slice apples up into small pieces and chop carrots into bite size pieces.

A Message From Garden City Mayor Donald T. Brudie About Hurricane Sandy

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

I do not have to tell you that we experienced a devastating hurricane that crippled Nassau County. As of this writing, a number of residents including myself and my family, are still without power and heat. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), over whom we have no control, is solely responsible for our electric service. However, knowing that LIPA cannot access its equipment if roads are impassable or pole lines not accessible from downed trees, our Village Departments worked day and night to cut and remove fallen trees from roadways, sidewalks and homes. The damage we sustained to Village trees is not only beyond imagination, but incalculable at this time.
I cannot commend nor thank our Village employees enough for their dedication, loyalty and stamina. Each and every employee experienced the same problems as did we in their personal lives - some worse as they dealt also with flooding - yet they all came to work leaving their families and homes unattended to make our Village roads passable and safe.
While this massive cleanup was - and still is - going on, we were unable to communicate with our residents by way of our Swift Reach Call Service or inter- net due to the area-wide power outage. Information was printed on our web-site but was extremely limited because of lack of reliable sources.
Also, I want to assure you that although we were not in communication, I have participated in twice daily conference calls with LIPA. I have expressed my outrage on behalf of all of us who have been and continue to be without power.
The information they have provided has been nothing more than warmed over press releases, failing to either identify specific plans or comment to timelines. There are no words to express my frustration with LIPA’s management - nor are there words to express my gratitude to those crews who have come from all over the Country and Canada to work to restore power.
Finally, please know that our local elected County and State officials have worked tirelessly to contend with the devastation left by “Sandy”. Special thanks to Kemp Hannon for his efforts in helping me to get Garden City back on line. As life slowly returns to normal, let us keep in our thoughts and prayers those who have lost everything - for whom complete recovery may never come.

Tips To Help Prepare Your Child for Their First Pediatric Dentist Visit!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Are you preparing your child for their first dental visit? If so, there are a couple of simple steps you should follow to ensure your child is ready for their first dental experience!
  • Bring your child to a grown-up dental office to familiarize him/her with the sights and sounds of the office.
  • Let your child sit in the dental chair and see the various tools and instruments the dentist will use to examine their teeth. Give your child the opportunity to ask any questions they may come up with when examining dental tools.
  • Use clever, fun words to explain the dental process. For example, tell them their teeth are being “counted” rather than examined and “tickled” when they’re being cleaned.
  • Talk to your children in a calm and relaxed tone when informing them of their dental visit.
  • Answer any questions your children may have and as truthfully as possible.
  • Never tell your child “It won’t hurt”. If something does end up causing them discomfort, it will make the process that much more difficult.

Why Cooking Meals at Home Is Important for Your Children's Health!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Does your family go out to eat often? Many families across the nation eat out several nights of week because of hectic schedules that seem to somehow always get busier. However, did you know meals out could mean up to 300 more calories for your kids or teens?

Sometimes when schedules are extremely busy, it’s hard to find the time to cook and put together a nutritious meal for your family. However, it’s extremely important to eat more meals at home rather than at a fast food chain or the local pizzeria.

This doesn't mean you should never take the kids along with you for a night out. If you’re planning a meal out soon, here’s a couple of tips to remember while out to eat, courtesy of mnn.com.
  • Limit the amount of sugary beverages high in calories to one serving and then have your kids switch to a glass of ice water.
  • Skip the kids menu all together. The items on the kids menu tend to be the most fattening items on the menu such as chicken fingers, mac and cheese, French fries and burgers.
  • If you’re going to a restaurant that you know will put a complimentary bread basket or bowl of tortilla chips – politely decline before they arrive at the table. This adds a ton of extra calories on to your meal.
  • Don’t look at the dessert menu. A restaurants dessert serving can add a lot of calories to a meal. If you’re craving something sweet, go home with your family and serve one small individual serving of ice cream or some fruit.

How To Handle Your Child's Dental Fears!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

One of the most difficult tasks for parents is getting their children who fear the dentist, to the office. It isn't uncommon for children to fear the dentist. There are many children who are absolutely terrified of the dentist.
However, the dentist may not be as scary as you once thought.

It is crucial that parents begin bringing their children to the dentist at age one. The younger you bring them; the more familiar they will be with the dentist and the office. The longer you wait, the more fearful they become.

Nowadays, many Pediatric Dentistry offices are very warm and inviting to young children. The office is a playful and welcoming environment geared toward helping children feel more comfortable.

As a parent, you should never let your child skip those dental checkups! The more times your child attends the office, the more familiar they’ll become with it.

Has your child been to the dentist recently? Make your appointment today! For more information, visit our Facebook page, LINKED HERE

How Children Can Enjoy Halloween Without Harming Their Teeth!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City
516-222-5100

Halloween is quickly approaching, which can only mean one thing – candy galore! Trick or treating is an event that children look forward to all year long! They’ll return home with bags filled with sugary candy that isn't at all good for their oral health! However, there are a couple ways your children can enjoy Halloween without harming their teeth!

Sugar-free gum is one item that can actually help prevent cavities! This is something we’d like to see pop up in more and more Halloween treat bags! Sugar-free gum helps to neutralize the effects of sugary snacks after eating. Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies are some other treats that won’t cause as much harm as chewy/sticky sweets will.

It is important for parents to monitor their children’s sweets intake and keep it to a minimum. It is key to teach children that eating sweets in moderation is OK, as long as they’re keeping up to date on taking proper care of their teeth.
