Go-kart Plan for Garden City Coming into Play

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City

East Garden City will possibly be the new hot spot for teenagers and young families looking to have a good time.

Edward Mangano, the Nassau County Executive plans on building an electric-powered go-kart racetrack. The plans will be privately funded and the track will be built on the vacant land just off Museum Row located in Garden City. This facility, whether it’s outdoors or indoors, will be Nassau County’s first go-kart attraction.

Nassau Deputy County Executive Rob Walker expects teens and families from both Nassau and Suffolk County to visit the go-kart track for a day of thrill.

Do you agree with Mangano and Walker’s plans to build a go-kart track? Do you think it will attract people from all over long island, or will it be a fad that gets old quickly?

Strawberries: Eat for Healthier and Whiter Teeth!

Are strawberries healthier then advertised? The delicious fruit is packed with a lot of vitamin C, which ultimately leads to a healthier heart, healthy gums and whiter teeth.

These red berries are super healthy, only eating a one cup serving of sliced strawberries gives you 163% of your daily dose vitamin C, and almost 12% of your daily fiber! Most importantly, strawberries have the vitamins to keep your mouth healthy.

Researchers believe that strawberries contain polyphenols, which are “antioxidants that assist in reversing problems caused by oxidative stress.” This substance limits the breakdown of starches, which leads to the reduction of plaque on your teeth.
The two ingredients that help teeth become naturally whiter are vitamin C and the astringent, both provided in strawberries. Studies have shown that the vitamin C helps clean the plaque away and the astringent cleans the surfacing stains of the tooth.

With that information being said, do you think scrubbing your teeth with strawberries will help whiten them? The answer is no, because the acidic juices in strawberries can damage tooth enamel.

School is finally out for the summer! Unfortunately, this means your kids aren't confined to a safe, tooth-friendly classroom all day. Instead, they are outdoors participating in sports and other activities, heightening their risk of dental injuries. A pediatric dentist expert at the University of Alabama stated, “Collision injuries with a friend or the ground definitely increase during the summer.” But don’t fret – dealing with your child’s damaged teeth doesn't have to be a disaster.
Here are some tips from Health.com (link-> http://news.health.com/2013/06/30/dealing-with-kids-summer-dental-surprises/) to ensure a smooth ride when faced with your child’s summertime teeth incidents.

• If your child breaks a tooth, bring the broken fragment to the dentist immediately!
• If your child’s tooth is knocked out, try your best to put it back in as soon as possible. This should be relatively painless, since the gum is normally numb after this type of injury. Putting the tooth back in quickly also increases chances of a full recovery.
• If you can’t put the tooth back in, soak it in milk and bring it to the dentist. Do your best to avoid touching the root of the tooth.
• If a tooth has shifted or moved out of its original location, visit your dentist right away.
Keep in mind that the dentist will be extremely crowded at this time of year, as other parents are rushing to fit in check-up appointments and deal with summertime accidents of their own. If you can, plan appointments ahead of time, to avoid excess stress and the scarce availability.
Here at Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City, we are ready for whatever the summer throws at your kid’s mouth! If your child is faced with a tooth accident, call us at 516-222-5100 for further information on how to proceed, and to book an appointment. Better safe than sorry!

Smashing World Records!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City

These past few months have been extremely busy with adults and children creating two new milestones for the teeth-care and dentistry industry! On June 25th, Colgate, along with many teeth-conscious consumers, broke the world record for “most people using mouthwash simultaneously.”

According to the World Record Academy, at approximately 12:30 pm, TV host Stacy Keibler, as well as 1,142 consumers, cleansed with Colgate Total Advanced Pro Shield Mouthwash at the exact same time.  Colgate supported the Make-a-Wish foundation by “swishing for a difference” and donating one dollar to the foundation for every participant in the audience!

But, that’s not all! Recently, Nigeria was added to the Guinness Book of World Records by setting the new record for “most people brushing their teeth at the same time.” The record was broken by over 300,000 school children, gathering simultaneously at hundreds of locations throughout the city. Dr Olurotimi Olojede, president of the Nigerian Dental Association, said the goal of the event was to teach kids the importance of good oral hygiene habits. One wise participant noted the importance of the event for dental care in her country by saying that in addition to having an amazing experience, she “thinks this is history.”

Healthy Summer Snacks for Children

Keep your child healthy this summer with fun healthy snacks. The Center for Science in the Public Interest recommends fruits, vegetables, healthy grains and low-fat dairy foods that will not only taste good but will be fun to create and eat.

Fruits are essential to a child’s diet. Canned, frozen and dried fruits are inexpensive and easy to prepare. To add more fun to the sweetness of the fruit kids can make their own fruit salad, fruit popsicles or smoothies.

Vegetables are not that easy to serve to children but adding light dips or salad dressings can make snack time more enjoyable. Ants on a log, (peanut butter with raisins on a stick of celery) are a creative idea for a snack as well as making homemade hummus.

Whole grains provide fiber, vitamins and minerals. Your child’s homemade hummus can be served with whole-wheat English muffins, tortillas or pita chips. Granola and cereal bars are low in sugar and fats.

Of course kids need calcium, so low-fat yogurts are beneficial to their growing bones. Low-fat cheese are can be served with vegetables or crackers to add calcium to your child’s diet as well.

To wash all these healthy snacks down serve water, low-fat or fat-free milk, soy drinks or 100% fruit juice.

Helpful tips to serve snacks include using colorful plates, napkins, cups or straws.

Keep your kids healthy this summer with not only healthy snacking but also healthy hygiene. For more information, please visit Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City at http://pediatricdentistryofgardencity.com/.
