National Children's Dental Health Month Quickly Coming To A Close

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

National Children’s Dental Health Month is quickly coming to a close.  What have you done to care for your child’s teeth?  It’s not too late to learn new ways to keep your child’s smile beautiful and healthy from a very young age.  At Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City and Glen Cove, we encourage parents and kids to keep their smiles healthy all year long.
Here are some tips on how to care for tiny teeth:

  • Keep Gums Clean - Wipe gums after meals to get your child used to an oral care routine.
  • Brush Baby Teeth - Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears.  Use a baby sized brush and a smear of toothpaste to clean the tooth.
  • Avoid Baby Bottle Decay - When babies fall asleep with their bottle, the sugary drink eats away at the tooth enamel.  Just like in adults, this can result in cavities.  Keep your baby’s mouth clean by wiping the gums and brushing new baby teeth after each feeding.
  • Visit our Office - Schedule your child’s first dental visit during the first six months after the first tooth erupts.

Easing Your Child's Dental Fears

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Were you afraid of the dentist as a kid? You're not alone. Many people share this same dental phobia. Fortunately, dentistry has come a long way over the years. Advancements in dental technologies and techniques now make dental office visits comfortable, relaxing, and even fun!

We are always looking for new ways to help kids enjoy their visit at Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove. Check out these three tips on how you can prepare your child for their dental visit at home:

Start Early Care- You should begin oral care even before your child's first teeth emerge. Clean your baby's gums with a baby toothbrush or wet cloth after feeding. Schedule your child's first dental visit when their first tooth emerges, or after their first birthday. By starting care early on, your child will become comfortable with caring for their teeth.

Practice and Learn- Make brushing teeth at home fun! There are plenty of books and YouTube videos that you can share with your children to encourage brushing.

Stay Positive- It is important that kids associate the dentist with a positive feeling. Bring their favorite book to read in the waiting room and let them know how healthy and clean their teeth will feel after the visit.

Is All Chocolate Created Equal?

When we think of a good oral health routine, rarely does "eat chocolate" come to mind. Up until recently, chocolate was on the do-not-eat list, along with the rest of the candy food group. When sugar comes in contact with the bacteria in the mouth, the sugar gets turned into acids. These acids eat away at teeth enamel and cause cavities. But did you know that not all chocolate is created equally?

Recent studies have found that dark chocolate actually has an anti-bacterial effect which offsets the high sugar level. As a result, dark chocolate fights against plaque. Research shows that cocoa extract is even more effective at fighting cavities than fluoride.

Furthermore, the compound CBH, a powder similar to caffeine, has been proven to help harden tooth enamel and prevent teeth from decaying. While this product is not yet available for human use, a person can administer the compound by eating chocolate! That's right, dark chocolate can provide the same effects!

Everything in moderation, of course, but we'll be sure to enjoy our Valentine's Day candy a little more guilt free this year!

For more information on the positive effects chocolate has on our teeth, CLICK HERE. Don't forget to schedule routine check-ups to assure your child's teeth are healthy and prevent damage from occurring.
