How Safe Are Dental X-Rays for Kids?

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Dental x-rays are an important part of routine dental care for kids of all ages.  However, many parents express concern over the safety of x-ray radiation and whether or not dental imaging is truly beneficial for their child's oral health and development.

We want to make sure that all parents that bring their children to Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove are comfortable and educated on the safety and importance dental x-rays have for the health and development of tiny teeth.

What Are Dental X-Rays?
Dental x-rays allow us to get a better look at the growth of your child's teeth, as well as identify tooth decay, dental diseases and infections.  By capturing an x-ray image of your child's smile, we gain insight into their dental health and development that allows us to catch problems early on.  This early detection is essential to preventing serious health issues and provides a visual record of tooth growth overtime.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Kids?
When discussing the safety of dental x-rays, it's important to first have a better understanding of what radiation is and where it comes from.

Radiation is the emission of energy as an electromagnetic wave.  While it is common knowledge that radiation is emitted when taking x-rays, many people don't realize that we are also exposed to natural background radiation in the environment around us every day.  This background radiation comes from space (cosmic rays), rocks, soil, and even living things.

Fortunately, the effects of background radiation have been heavily studied.  When comparing cancer rates in high- and low- background radiation regions, studies have NOT shown any correlation between background radiation and an increase in cancer incidence.

The amount of radiation that is produced from bite wing x-rays that we use in dental offices is actually significantly lower than the amount of background radiation exposure that we receive regularly.  To put this in perspective, the amount of background radiation that we come into contact with each year is equivalent to approximately 620 bitewing x-rays!

Read more about the safety and benefits of dental x-rays in this article published by the American Dental Association.  You can also contact our office with any questions you have about dental x-rays, including their safety, how often your kids should have them taken, and why they are an important part of routine dental care.

Tooth-Friendly Father's Day BBQ Tips

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Father's Day is right around the corner!  Will you be celebrating with a family BBQ this weekend?  Here are a few tooth-friendly BBQ tips to keep in mind.

Tooth Friendly BBQ Tips:

  • Have a Crunchy Fruit Salad - Crunchy fruits like apples and pears are good for your teeth!  Their textures help wipe bacteria off of your teeth and they require a lot of chewing - which increases bacteria-neutralizing saliva.
  • Stay Hydrated - Drinking lots of water is important on hot days.  It helps keep you hydrated and helps keep your teeth clean.
  • Add Cheese to Your Burger - Calcium helps teeth grow strong!  They are great not just for growing kids, but for adults too.
  • Don't Forget to Brush & Floss - Even with a tooth-friendly diet, it's still important to remember to brush and floss after eating.  This will help keep your teeth bright, white and healthy all summer long.

Check out this article for more tooth-friendly tips.  You can also contact our office with any questions you have about caring for tiny teeth this weekend.  Call 516-222-5100 to contact our Garden City office or 516-759-7000 to contact our Glen Cove office.  Don’t forget to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and check out our YouTube channel!

We know it's not always easy to stay healthy when you're away from home.  However, with a little planning, you can snack healthy on your summer vacation!  Snacks to pack for your next getaway that are good for you -- and your teeth!

Healthy Snacks for Your Summer Vacation:
  • Roasted Chickpeas - Chickpeas are lower in calories and fat than nuts, but still satisfy your salty craving!
  • Sugar Free Yogurt - Craving something cool?  Pack some sugar free yogurt into a cooler before your trip to the beach.  Just make sure that the yogurt is next to the ice or a cool drink to let it keep while on-the-go.
  • Trail Mix - Pretzels and peanuts are a great travel snack.  Just make sure your brush when you reach your destination!  Frequent snacking can leave plaque-inducing bacteria in your mouth.
  • Apples - Apples are the perfect on-the-go snack!  They are easy to bring in any bag, and they are good for your teeth too.
Want to stay healthy on your summer vacation?  Check out this article for more healthy travel snacks.

Cool Off with These Healthy Snacks

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City & Glen Cove
Garden City:516-222-5100
Glen Cove: 516-759-7000

Looking to cool off with a refreshing summer snack?  Here are a few treats that will keep kids cool (and healthy) on hot days!

Healthy Snacks:

  • Frozen Watermelon Slices - Rather than having kids snack on sugary ice pops and ice cream sandwiches, freeze some watermelon over night.  Watermelon is a quick and healthy way to cool off!  It can be a great option for teething toddlers too!  Just remember, watermelon does contain natural sugars - so kids should still brush their teeth after snacking.
  • Fruit Pizza - What kid doesn't love to snack on pizza?  This recipe for fruit pizza is a healthy way to snack without filling up.
  • Bananas and Peanut Butter - This is the perfect grab-and-go breakfast option for kids on the run.

If you want to schedule a spring cleaning and exam for your kids, contact our office.  Call 516-222-5100 to contact our Garden City office or 516-759-7000 to contact our Glen Cove office.  Don’t forget to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and check out our YouTube channel!
