Tips on Your Child's First Dentist Visit!

Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City

It's important to get your child familiar and comfortable with the dentist as early as possible! You should schedule their first appointment as soon as the first tooth appears. Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City specializes in dental work with children!

The ADA recommends scheduling your child’s first appointment up to 6 months after their first tooth appears but no later than their first birthday.  Although the first visit is usually for your dentist to examine their mouth and to check growth and development, it is important to get your child comfortable with the dentist’s office and get them practicing healthy habits.

Here are a few tips to make the first visit run as smoothly as possible! First, start with the time of the appointment.  Try to schedule it when the child will be rested and cooperative.  Your children can pick up on any anxieties, insecurities and fears so it is important to project a positive emphasis.  Try to never bribe your children to go or use the appointment as a threat or punishment.  This gives a negative connotation to the dentist and can produce anxiety about the visit.  It is good to talk to your child and let them know before what procedures the dentist might be performing.  You can expect the dentist to clean and perform a search for any oral injury or cavities, and provide tips on how to proceed.  He also might discuss habits like teething, pacifier use or thumb sucking, followed by a discussion of treatment if need and when to schedule the next check up.

At Pediatric Dentistry of Garden City, we are dedicated to making dental appointments run as smoothly and comfortable as possible for you and your child!
